The Racing Rabbits program is for cross-country skiers, ages 9 to 13 (as of Dec. 31, 2009), who want to improve their cross country skiing skills and enjoy the outdoors in winter. It focuses on:
The program is designed for young skiers who have completed their level 3 (or equivalent) in the Jack Rabbit program. It will consist of two parts: dry land training (starts September 12, 2009 until snow) and skiing (snow until April, weather permitting). Please note that an Adventure Rabbits program will be offered separately this year.
To participate in the Racing Rabbit Program, skiers must have attained Level 3 Jackrabbit (see Criteria of admissibility, below), be enthusiastic about skiing and committed to attending two practices per week, 3 practices for the midgets.
Furthermore, the kids will have to participate to mandatory races for their age group. Please note that the Gatineau Loppets and the Canadian Ski marathon do not count as a race but the Racing rabbits will participate as well as the Midget championships (NORAMS).
Midgets (Age 12-13): The midgets will be coached by the clubs Head coach (Chris Hallderson) for the weeks practices with the help of volunteers parents. There will be two practices during the week: Tuesday at 16h45 and Thursday at 18h30 with the other Racing Rabbits as well as the Saturdays practice
The goal of the program is to offer the kids the opportunity to improve their skiing abilities and develop endurance to cover distances. and to learn to race. The racing abilities will be learned gradually according to the age of the kids. On top of participating in the races, the kids will establish with their coach distances they want to cover during the weekend trainings.
Dryland training: Fall training will include fun activities designed to improve athletes fitness and endurance such as trail running, circuit training, treasure hunt, adventure race, orienteering, etc. Mountain biking and roller skiing will also be part of the training especially for the Midgets.
Skiing: The on-snow program is designed to encourage participants to push themselves towards goals that they establish with their coaches. Children must expect to cover at least 5 to 10 kms in an outing, depending on the weather and conditions as well as to learn to be ready for racing.
Volunteer: Chelsea Nordiq is a community-based ski club, and in order to offer a successful program, we rely on volunteers. Each family will be required to contribute their time to the program. We need coaches, assistant coaches; parent helpers for events such as treasure hunts, orienteering etc; event organizing (end of year banquet, Cookie Beiner, etc), assistance at regional races hosted by other clubs, etc.
You will receive a "volunteer" form via E-mail to register. We ask that you supply this information ASAP.
